Tanya Milton
Commissioner, District 5Tanya Milton, recently elected to serve as 5th District Chatham County Commissioner began her newspaper career as a high school student selling advertising for the "Oracle" at Windsor Forest High School. She attended Marsh-Draughon Business College in Atlanta, Ga.

In 1975, Milton was hired by The Savannah Tribune to typeset and layout the weekly newspaper. After only one year, she was promoted to Editor & General Manager and took charge of the production of the newspaper until 1978 when she moved to Detroit and continued her newspaper career with The Detroit Free Press and later with the Kansas City Star and Times.
In August of 1981, Milton moved back to Savannah and began a full-time career as an Account Executive at the Savannah Morning News, where she worked both classified and retail advertising sales. After 20 years with The Savannah Morning News, Milton began putting together a business plan to open her own marketing company, T-Time Marketing. She was contracted by The Savannah Tribune as Marketing Director in June 2002. In July 2003, she was hired to work as Marketing and Advertising Director. She currently serves as Vice President and Advertising Director of The Savannah Tribune.
As a resident of the Chatham County’s 5th District since 1963, Milton is deeply engaged in her community serving several organizations including, Boy Scouts of America, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of the Coastal Empire, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, American Diabetes Association, Homebuilders Association of Greater Savannah and Vice President of Savannah Jazz Association. She recently raised over $12,000 as a part of the Susan G. Komen Big Wig Campaign for breast cancer. She has served on the Metropolitan Planning Commission for the past 10 years, as Chairman 2016-2018. She has received numerous awards while serving her community. She is the 2010 Mirror Ball Winner of Dancing With Savannah Stars for CASA.
Milton is a member of Top Ladies of Distinction Savannah Chapter, National Council of Negro Women Savannah Chapter and working towards a Lifetime Member of the Savannah Chapter of the NAACP. Milton is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Southeast Georgia. She is a longtime member of Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church. She is married to Walter Thomas. She has two daughters and two grandchildren.
