Chatham County Animal Services: Supporting Families and Their Pets During Floods

Chatham County Animal Services is dedicated to helping both people and their pets during times of crisis. The team was on the ground alongside swift water rescue teams, ready to assist whenever an animal was brought out of the floodwaters. Whether at evacuation sites, shelter-in-place locations, or directly in flooded areas, the officers were there to provide immediate transport and aid.

Animal Services provided essential supplies such as dog food, leashes, muzzles, and blankets, and set up kennels for pets in need. For evacuees who were not comfortable bringing their animals to shelter-in-place locations, Chatham County Animal Services offered to take their pets into their facility, ensuring they were safe, well-fed, and cared for. Officers provided daily updates to pet owners, offering them peace of mind during these challenging times.

To date, Chatham County Animal Services has conducted about 20 rescues, taking in 13 animals at their shelter, while three have been placed in the shelter-in-place set up by the Red Cross. Animal Services has also coordinated with other fosters and shelters across southern Georgia to ensure every pet has a safe place to stay.

The main goal of Chatham County Animal Services is to provide a safety net for families who have lost everything. The organization aims to ensure that once these families are back on their feet, they can reunite with their pets at no cost. Chatham County Animal Services is committed to supporting them every step of the way as they rebuild their lives and welcome their beloved animals back home.
