E911 Operations During the Winter Storm Event

 

This week’s snowstorm was exciting for many, but also something Chatham County residents are not used to. As soon as it became clear that the winter storm would impact Chatham County, E911 began extensive preparations. These included ensuring personal readiness by preparing clothing and personal items in case they needed to shelter in place. Teams were briefed on schedules, and logistics were arranged for sleeping accommodations and meals. Backup systems, including emergency power, were inspected to ensure operational readiness. Throughout the storm, staff received real-time updates and safety alerts to keep them informed.

 

Calls Received

The E911 Center has handled a significant number of incidents during the storm, with 1,188 incidents on Tuesday and 1,114 on Wednesday. Among these were several notable emergencies, including accidents involving jackknifed tractor-trailers on the Talmadge Bridge, a fire with an entrapment, cardiac arrests, and other medical emergencies. In addition to these major incidents, the staff managed various storm-related emergencies while continuing to handle routine calls.

The most common storm related calls included reports of road hazards such as dangerous conditions on bridges and roadways, stranded vehicles stuck on bridges or in ditches, requests for motorist assistance, and multiple vehicle accidents caused by icy conditions.

 

Teamwork

The winter storm tested the resilience and dedication of the E911 team, and they rose to the occasion with remarkable teamwork. Supervisor Wilson exemplified this commitment when her vehicle broke down a mile from the E911 Center on Wednesday morning. Determined, she walked the remaining distance to ensure she arrived on time. She also ensured the Center was adequately staffed and coordinated team adjustments as needed. Supervisor Debnam, a supervisor who was off duty noticed the worsening weather and came in to assist. He used his all-wheel-drive SUV to assist colleagues who were unable to drive due to icy conditions, ensuring maximum staffing during a critical shift. Supervisor Debnam also helped Supervisor Wilson retrieve her vehicle and escorted her safely back to the Center.

Despite personal challenges, the team worked tirelessly to maintain operations and ensure public safety during the storm.
