April is National County Government Month and the perfect time for Chatham County to join the National Association of Counties (NACo) in talking about the roles and responsibilities of County Governments in serving their community residents.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of National County Government Month, our social media has been highlighting the Great Places, Great Services, and Great People that help Chatham County check ALL the boxes for great government. Here we’re wrapping up the month with three articles that bring it all together. The focus of this installment is all the Great Services that Chatham County Government provides. For many people, service is a word that easily comes to mind when civic topics come up. Service is and ought to be the purpose of government. Many County Services are highly visible as they go about their business out and about in the community. But how many people actually know all the different types of services provided by their county government?
PUBLIC SAFETY is one of the most visible areas of service in any community. The dedicated teams that keep our community safe 24/7 are on the front lines and easy to see. From emergency response to crime prevention, our local heroes work tirelessly to protect and serve. In Chatham County our government provides:
🔥 Fire Department – Responding to fires, medical emergencies, and disasters to keep our families safe.
🚔 Police Department – Patrolling neighborhoods, preventing crime, and building community trust.
⭐ Sheriff’s Office – Providing law enforcement, managing the county jail, and ensuring courthouse security.
📞 911 Dispatch – The first voice in an emergency, connecting people to lifesaving help in seconds.
💊 Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team – Stopping illegal drugs from harming our community.
Every call, every shift, every day—they are here for YOU!
INFRASTRUCTURE is an area of service that sometimes is in the spotlight for the shiny, big things that improve our community, like beautiful new buildings and bridges. It is also responsible for the many smaller things that are never in the spotlight, but are critical for keeping daily life running smoothly for us. Things like safe water systems and roads, and sustainability options for our future are Infrastructure services. Chatham County provides and salutes the teams that build, maintain, and protect our community:
🏗️ Engineering – Designing safe roads, bridges, and infrastructure to keep our county moving.
🏢 Building Safety – Ensuring homes and businesses meet safety codes for a stronger, safer community.
🚧 Public Works – Maintaining roads, water systems, and essential services that keep daily life running smoothly.
🌿 Resilience – Preparing for disasters, protecting natural resources, and planning for a sustainable future.

FISCAL SERVICES are something often thought of as happening behind closed doors, but we'd like to tell you -- at every level, Chatham County is ALWAYS focused on being the most ethical, conscientious, above-board stewards possible with all of our community's resources. The fiscal services provided by Chatham County Government have exacting processes for pretty much everything that the County does and they make sure everyone involved dots every i and crosses every t. We have dedicated, fulltime oversight purely to make sure we never knowingly or unknowingly fail in that respect. Team Chatham walks the walk when it comes to accountability.

Finance -- Managing everything from creating the County’s budget to paying the bills.
Purchasing -- Handling contracts, bids, and proposals to ensure we're getting the best value.
Internal Audit --Improving all our operations by conducting audits, making recommendations, and ensuring compliance.
FUN FACT: Chatham County is legally required to adopt a balanced budget every year! Right now, our Finance team is hard at work preparing the FY26 budget, which the County Manager will present to the Commission in June. It all goes into effect July 1, 2025!
PUBLIC WELFARE is a major service good governments provide for their community residents. Whether it’s tending to
everyday health and welfare issues or calling all hands on deck to provide all the services necessary in emergency or crisis situations, Chatham County understands the non-negotiable need to protect the public health and safety of our community!
🌪️ Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) – Leading disaster preparedness, response, and recovery to keep our community prepared and resilient.
🗣️ Public Information Office – Keeping residents informed with timely, accurate updates during emergencies and every day.
🦟 Mosquito Control – Monitoring and managing mosquito populations to prevent the spread of disease and protect public health.
🐶 Animal Services – Caring for lost and stray animals, promoting adoptions, and enforcing animal welfare laws.
These teams work behind the scenes to keep our community informed, safe, and healthy!
